Early digital music workstations

These systems introduced digital workflows beyond tape-based editing:

Digital audio workstation (DAW)

A DAW integrates audio hardware, recorded media, MIDI, processing, and mixing within one software environment.

  • record and import audio and MIDI
  • arrange and edit material on a timeline
  • process, automate, route, mix, and monitor signals
  • host instrument and effect plug-ins
  • render and export completed work

Overlapping roles in DAW production

A single person may move between several forms of practice:

  • composer: organizes material and form
  • performer: records gestures, takes, and automation
  • editor: selects and reshapes recorded material
  • engineer: records, routes, processes, and measures signals
  • producer: makes decisions about the complete work

Technical decisions become part of composition, performance, and authorship.

Destructive and non-destructive editing

DAWs normally store editing decisions without changing the original audio file.

  • non-destructive editing: cuts, trims, fades, gain changes, and processing are stored as project instructions
  • destructive editing: directly changes the sample data stored in an audio file

The project stores editing decisions while the source files remain available.

Toolbar and transport

The toolbar provides editing commands and timeline states. The transport controls playback, recording, position, repeat, stop, and pause.

Timeline, tempo, and grid

The timeline organizes tracks, media items, and automation in musical or absolute time.

  • tempo: defines musical timing in beats per minute
  • grid: divides the timeline into rhythmic or absolute intervals

Tracks and media items

Tracks contain, process, and route audio, MIDI, or automation data. A media item is a recorded or imported segment placed on the timeline.

Regions, clips, and events

DAWs use different terms for objects and ranges on the timeline.

  • clip: timeline segment in Pro Tools or Audition
  • region: Logic Pro object containing MIDI or referring to audio material
  • event / part: Cubase uses audio events and MIDI parts; parts contain MIDI events
  • media item: REAPER object containing audio or MIDI

Automation

Automation records and plays back parameter changes (volume, pan, effects, etc.) over time, enabling dynamic, evolving mixes.

The interface is not neutral

A DAW interface guides how sound is imagined and organized.

  • the timeline encourages linear construction
  • grids and default meter favor synchronization
  • tracks divide material into parallel layers
  • channel strips inherit concepts from tape recorders and mixing consoles

Routing and buses

The DAW Environment

Channels, sends, shared buses, and outputs in a mixing-console signal path

Mixing consoles established the routing logic inherited by DAWs: channels route, split, combine, and distribute audio through shared buses.

Folders, buses, and groups in REAPER

REAPER coordinates tracks through audio routing or control linking.

Method Relationship Typical use

A submix combines several tracks before the Master. In REAPER, it can use a parent/child folder or explicit routing to a bus track.

The direct paths remain active while post-fader sends feed an additional processing bus.

Track grouping

Grouping links selected controls without creating a submix. Each track retains its normal route to the Master.

The Routing Matrix shows connections between tracks, buses, hardware inputs, and outputs.

  • create or remove routes
  • inspect complex signal paths
  • verify folder, send, and output assignments

MIDI

The DAW Environment

MIDI data and controllers

MIDI exchanges performance and control data, not recorded sound.

  • notes and duration
  • velocity and expression
  • continuous controllers and commands

A controller translates physical gestures into MIDI data:

  • keys, pads, wheels, and pedals
  • knobs, faders, pressure, and buttons
  • the receiving instrument determines the sound

In REAPER, MIDI events are stored in media items and edited in the MIDI editor.

  • horizontal position: time
  • vertical position: pitch
  • note length: duration
  • lower lanes: velocity and control data

MIDI instruments in the DAW

The DAW hosts plug-ins and connects them to its MIDI, audio, timing, automation, and routing systems.

  • an instrument plug-in generates audio, usually from MIDI data
  • an effect plug-in processes an incoming audio signal

The format must be supported by the operating system, DAW, and plug-in developer.

  • VST3: cross-platform

AI-assisted functions in DAWs

Machine-learning models support specific tasks in some DAWs and plug-ins.

  • source separation and speech transcription
  • pitch, tempo, and content analysis
  • generative performance and processing suggestions

These functions may be integrated into the DAW, loaded as plug-ins, or provided by external services.

The DAW Environment

Self-contained projects

A portable project keeps the project file and all used media together.

  • copy imported recordings into the project media folder
  • separate source media, project versions, and renders
  • use stable file and folder names
  • reopen a copied project folder to test portability

Project safety

  • undo history: reverses recent editing operations
  • autosave: writes recovery copies at regular intervals
  • backup: preserves earlier project states
  • versioned save: creates deliberate milestones before major changes

Use clear names such as montage_01, montage_02_edit, and montage_03_mix.

Practical exercises

Project setup and automation

Create a small REAPER project with one generated sound.

  1. save the project in a new, self-contained folder
  2. create and render a short sound with JS: Tone Generator
  3. use a volume envelope to create a clear level change
  4. close and reopen the project; confirm that the media and automation remain available

Bypass the envelope and compare both versions.

MIDI and a virtual instrument

Use ReaSynth, a basic synthesizer included with REAPER.

  1. load VSTi: ReaSynth (Cockos) and select the Virtual MIDI Keyboard as its input
  2. arm the track, enable monitoring, and record a short phrase
  3. edit either its notes, timing, or velocity
  4. change one ReaSynth parameter without changing the MIDI item

Compare changes to the performance data with changes to the instrument sound.
